With the subject of austerity hanging in the air of every single news report and meeting with the bank manager, value for money is very much the topic with any corporate purchases at the present time. For those that are investing money, spending sensibly is the theme of the moment and everybody accountable for making investment judgements is looking to get a little more for their money.
In the business environment all attentions are shifting towards the summer and possible pay increases with the dawn of the new tax season. Bosses will have significant judgements to make around how they reward their staff and who is going to benefit from pay rises, with many businesses being forced into lay-offs and pay freezes.
So what will this mean for this years corporate gifts? Are rewards and incentives on hold this year as businesses deal with the effects of the recession?
Not necessarily. When times are difficult people do not just stop spending and in truth this would have a negative long term effect both to the business and the economy. What does arise is that businesses hold on to their funds and make what they spend go further. Instead of putting a complete halt on spending, they are seeking extra value for money and to see what they spend as an investment.
This is why going premium with corporate gifts is an enticing option when businesses are trying to spend more sensibly. Organizations still need to incentivise their employees and thank their customers and this is still an essential way of boosting staff motivation and making your clients feel appreciated. At the lower end of the market, promotional items such as plastic pens can be very cheap but particularly disposable in nature as they don't have a high perceived value. In healthier financial times, the temptation can be to get an item to everybody you possibly can, leading to a sizable volume of cheaper gifts are utilised as corporate gifts.
When times are tough it will be more appealing for organizations to look to their staff and best clients when they are thinking of giving gifts, buying fewer in volume as a result but looking more to quality. Premium executive gifts that have a high perceived value are going to be viewed more as a personal present and be better received than their cheaper alternative, making any branding more powerful and leading to greater value for money. If a business gift is of premium quality then it will stand out from others, giving not only the gift but the branding on it greater prominence and greater visibility.
The fact that it is also significantly less disposable in nature gives it a higher probability of being utilized, let alone the beneficial effects it is going to have on the company who gave it by the fact that it is a more premium object. The business gift that is awarded will inevitably reflect back on to the company who awarded it. If the gift is cheap and tacky, what does that say about the company who awarded it?
Rather than ceasing purchasing altogether, companies can spend more wisely in their advertising and employee incentives and form a positive image for both their brand and their long term prospects.
